Unitree R1: a humanoid robot for under 6,000 dollars

Unitree has introduced the R1, one of the cheapest humanoid robots on the market, with a price starting below the 5,000 dollar mark. Despite the low price it handles acrobatics, understands voice commands and runs on multimodal artificial intelligence. Let us look at what the Unitree R1 offers and what its arrival means.
What the Unitree R1 is
The Unitree R1 is a compact humanoid robot that began shipping in the United States at the end of June 2026. The aim is to make humanoid robotics accessible to a much wider group of developers, schools and enthusiasts than the expensive models so far allowed.
The robot is designed as a lightweight platform with low-inertia motors, which makes maintenance easier as well as the development of custom movements and scenarios.
Unitree R1 specifications
The R1 measures 123 centimetres and weighs only 27 to 29 kilograms, so it is among the smaller and lighter humanoids. The standard version has 26 degrees of freedom, while the more economical R1 Air version has 20.
Movement is handled by permanent magnet synchronous motors with crossed roller bearings. Each arm joint can hold a load of approximately two kilograms at full extension.

What the Unitree R1 can do
Despite the low price, the robot showed surprisingly dynamic movement in demonstrations. It managed to recover its balance after a stumble, clean somersaults, handstands and movements inspired by martial arts, while maintaining stability on various surfaces.
These capabilities show that even an affordable humanoid today handles complex dynamic motor skills that until recently were the preserve of expensive research machines.
AI and control
The Unitree R1 runs on an eight-core processor that handles multimodal artificial intelligence. It processes voice commands through an array of four microphones, perceives its surroundings with binocular cameras and communicates through speakers.
The robot supports Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2 and requires no programming for basic control. For developers, however, it is open to creating custom scenarios and behaviour.
Price and availability
The R1 Air version starts at 4,900 dollars, the standard R1 costs 5,900 dollars directly from the manufacturer. Through other resellers the price is around 8,990 dollars, and the educational R1 Edu version is available on request.
The main trade-off for the low price is battery life of around one hour of active operation. Thanks to the quick two-second battery swap, however, this can be worked around in practice.
What it means for the market and events
The arrival of cheap humanoids like the R1 makes this technology more accessible and speeds up the development of applications. At the same time, it remains true that a small robot with short endurance is not a universal solution for every task.
